Socially Responsible Investing has emerged as an important 'investing theme' in the 1990's and chances are, it will continue well into the next millenium.   Socially Responsible Investing is a process of 'screening' out companies that provide positive records in such areas as safe and useful products and services, employee relations, the environment and overall corporate citizenship.  I suggest that you take a good, hard look at what's available in this area.

Socially Responsible Investing is here to Stay

Socially responsible investing can be defined as the integration of social and ethically moral criteria in the investment making decision process. It is based in the belief that personal wealth and values DO NOT have to be mutually exclusive.

In a socially responsible investment you won't find companies that are involved in the business of tobacco, nuclear power, weapons, gambling and the like.   Instead, you will find companies that make solid, positive contributions to local, regional or global societies.

These Companies generally have 5 (five) common Characteristics

Socially responsible investments seek companies that promote economic and social justice. This is done through five basic screening tests, which include:

® Responsible Corporate Citizenship ¬

Companies that provide innovative technology or services, the promotion of healthy lifestyles, provide generous charitable contributions, hire minorities and women that serve in senior management or board positions, child care and elder benefits to workers, etc.

® Responsible Employee Relationships ¬

Companies that provide profit-sharing, employee stock ownership plans, participation in corporate decisions, etc.

® Responsible Environmental Concerns ¬

Companies that demonstrate pollution control measures or pollution prevention programs, recycling, etc.

® Responsible Impact on non-U.S. soil ¬

Companies that promote fair wage scales when operating in foreign countries, support human rights and local environments, education, etc.

® Responsible and Safe Products ¬

Companies that manufacture or provide products and services, leaders in research in development, etc.

These can be very tough guidelines to follow and can potentially clash with the stockholders desire for "returns at any cost" attitude.

However, there are also can be many rewards, both economically and emotionally.

At Fielder Financial Management, Ltd., we follow these 'socially responsible investments' with a keen eye.  The trend points positively in this direction and we have seen our customers experience favorable economic results by subscribing to this investing theory.
